in which the Doctor is very heterosexual

This is one of the reasons why I love Doctor Who, they really just do not give a shit about sexuality. In series 1 episode 2 a fucking tree woman fancied the Doctor. They’ve had lesbians, lesbian lizard women, gays, interspecies relationships, Jack, a transgender horse and so much more. If there were such a thing as a LGBT safe show it’s Doctor Who.

#I love how Jack gets his own category

And I think the best part of it is that they don’t go overboard trying to emphasize it. A lot of shows that have lesbian, gay, bi, trans, or any other orientated couple/character kind of throw it in your face like lOoK WOw GaY iS OkaY, LOoK hoW LGBT-FRieNdLY wE ArE, but with Doctor Who they just have some random people doing what they have to do and being bad ass and then somewhere along the way you find out their sexual preferences but they don’t make a big deal out of it.

And on a family/children’s show, no less.

ARTIE TAKES A STAND

Ask the glee cast and they’ll tell you Kevin McHale is their show’s best male dancer (well, aside from Harry Shum Jr.), But because his character, Artie, uses a wheelchair, McHale has only once before been given an opportunity to show off his fancy foot moves. That was “The Safety Dance,” a fantasy sequence that took place in the middle of a mall way back in Season 1.

Now, Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” provides McHale a second dream scene- complete with the original video’s costly spaceship- to showcase his talents, appropriately as part of a duet with Shum. It’s terrifying,” says McHale. “But this was something I fought for.”

He and Shum took it upon themselves to work up a presentation for Glee exec producer Ryan Murphy, assigning Jackson’s catalog of songs to different cast members, ” I love Michael Jackson’s music more than anybody ever,” says McHale. When Murphy bit, they were invited into the writers’ room to formally pitch their vision of a Jackson tribute. A month later, cameras were rolling. “We ended up using like half of their suggestions,” says Murphy. “So in many ways the episode is the Kevin and Harry playlist.”

In the episode, Artie is obsessed with the King of Pop and in aheated opening scene, he faces off with Schuester- he’s fed up with the glee club kids never ending harassment at the hands of bullies. The dream sequence begins when Artie literallly stands up for himself. “I’m almost scared, because I want to do Michael justice,” says McHale. “My biggest concern is making sure we do something fresh while keeiping his integrity.”

Ultimately, McHale and Shum encountered just one big obstacle to over: which of them would take on the Janet Jackson role. Says McHale, “I asked Harry, ‘How high can you sing?’”
