"Oh I remember! The chemical reaction, that will solve the mystery concerning the persecution of Mr. John Vincent Harden."

"Precisely. I’ve spent the entire week in the Imperial Science Museum and I think this is the answer."

The Devil’s Foot

Unpublished photograph from an unused scene.

In the Granada episode, we only see Holmes tying a turnoquite from a back shot, his arm out. He covers his arm as Watson walks in and unsuccessfully hides the cocaine.

This is the episode where Holmes buries the Cocaine under sand at the beach. While this is not canonical (though Holmes does stop using), it was a deliberate choice on Bretts part. He learned that a younger audience was watching the series and felt the drug usage was inappropriate. Reportedly, Brett wrote to Jean Conan Doyle and asked permission to have the scene of Holmes breaking the habit on his own so younger viewers would not be influenced.
